How to know if you have prostate issues
Men with a family background of prostate cancer and older men should see their doctor to have regular screenings. A simple blood test called PSA can detect an enlarged prostate. It can also show if there’s a chance of developing cancer or any other medical issues that require treatment.
If your doctor suspects that you have a prostatic problem, he will want to learn about all of your symptoms and the length of time they have been occurring. They will ask you about any pain or burning you have when you urinate, and whether you’ve noticed any changes in your urine. A digital rectal (DRE) may be recommended, in which a finger is placed on your prostate with a lubricated glove from inside your rectum. This takes between 10-15 seconds.
Symptoms of Prostate Problems
The prostate is a walnut-sized gland found in the lower urinary tract, in the front and back of the penis. The prostate is responsible for producing the semen that is used to produce sperm. BPH is the most common prostate condition. It occurs when the prostate grows and interferes with the flow of urine. Other symptoms include painful urination, a weak flow of urine, and hesitancy or stopping midstream. Some men with BPH experience fecal (or bowel) incontinence. A more serious symptom is the inability to urinate, which is a medical issue.
Medicine for Prostate Problems
There are many different medicines that can be used to help with prostate problems. These can be pills or tablets, or they can be in the form of liquids that are put into a suppository. The liquid is then passed into the bladder through your penis. A common medication is saw palmetto, which can be bought as a herbal supplement in pill form or in a liquid extract. These medications may be used in combination or alone, depending upon your doctor’s recommendation.
Surgery for Prostate Problems
Surgery may be an option if lifestyle changes and medications do not improve your symptoms. The surgery could be performed by your GP at their office or by an urologist at the hospital. Your doctor will explain to you the pros and con of each surgery type so that you can decide which is best for your needs. They will also explain any other options that are available, such as having regular check-ups with your GP or with a urologist at the hospital.
The good news is BPH and most other prostate issues are not cancerous. This doesn’t mean that they can be ignored. It is important to continue your regular visits with your GP as well as your PSA/DRE tests. These tests are the best way to detect cancer and other conditions before they get serious. If the disease is caught early, treatments can save lives. This is particularly true of prostate cancer, which is usually treatable if it’s caught before it becomes advanced.
