How to know if you have prostate issues
Men over 50 and those with a history of prostate cancer in their family should be screened regularly by their doctor. A simple blood test called PSA can detect an enlarged prostate. It can also show if there’s a chance of developing cancer or any other medical issues that require treatment.
If your doctor believes you have a prostate problem they will want to hear all about your symptoms and how long they’ve been happening. You’ll be asked if there is any burning or pain when you urinate. They may also ask if your urine has changed. They may recommend a digital rectal exam (DRE), where a gloved and lubricated finger is placed on the prostate from inside your rectum. This takes between 10-15 seconds.
Prostate problems symptoms
The prostate, a walnut-sized organ, is located in the lower tract of the urinary system. It can be found on the front or back of penis. The prostate is responsible for producing the semen that is used to produce sperm. The most common prostate problem is benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), which occurs when the prostate enlarges and interferes with urine flow. Other symptoms include painful urination, a weak flow of urine, and hesitancy or stopping midstream. Some men with BPH experience fecal (or bowel) incontinence. A more serious symptom is the inability to urinate, which is a medical issue.
Medicine for Prostate Issues
There are many different medicines that can be used to help with prostate problems. These medicines can be taken as pills or tablets, but they can also be liquids put into a supppository. The liquid is then passed through the penis into your bladder. A common medication is saw palmetto, which can be bought as a herbal supplement in pill form or in a liquid extract. These medications may be used in combination or alone, depending upon your doctor’s recommendation.
Surgery for Prostate Issues
If lifestyle changes or medicines do not improve symptoms, surgery may be an alternative. The surgery could be performed by your GP at their office or by an urologist at the hospital. Your doctor or nurse specialist will explain the pros and cons of different types of surgery to you so you can make an informed decision. They will also explain other options, such as regular check-ups at your GP’s office or with a urologist in the hospital.
The good news is BPH and most other prostate issues are not cancerous. But that doesn’t mean they can be ignored. It’s important to keep up with your regular visits to the GP, as well as having your PSA and DRE tests. These can be the best way of detecting cancer or other conditions before they become serious. If the disease is caught early, treatments can save lives. This is especially true of prostate carcinoma, which can be treated if caught before it progresses.
