How to Know if you have prostate problems

Men who are older and those with a family history of prostate cancer should see their doctor for regular screening. A simple blood test called PSA can detect an enlarged prostate. It can also indicate if there is a risk of developing cancer or other medical problems that may need treatment.

If you believe that your doctor has diagnosed you with a prostate condition, they will ask about your symptoms. Tell them how long they have been going on. They will ask you about any pain or burning you have when you urinate, and whether you’ve noticed any changes in your urine. A digital rectal (DRE) may be recommended, in which a finger is placed on your prostate with a lubricated glove from inside your rectum. This takes between 10-15 seconds.

Prostate problems symptoms

The prostate is a walnut-sized gland found in the lower urinary tract, in the front and back of the penis. It’s responsible for producing semen, which is used in the production of sperm. BPH is the most common prostate condition. It occurs when the prostate grows and interferes with the flow of urine. Other symptoms are painful urination or a weak urine stream, as well as hesitancy, or stopping midstream. Some men with BPH experience fecal (or bowel) incontinence. A more serious symptom is the inability to urinate, which is a medical issue.

Medicine for Prostate Issues

Many different medicines can be used to treat prostate problems. These can be pills or tablets, or they can be in the form of liquids that are put into a suppository. The liquid then passes into the bladder via your penis. A common medication is saw palmetto, which can be bought as a herbal supplement in pill form or in a liquid extract. These medications may be used in combination or alone, depending upon your doctor’s recommendation.

Surgery for Prostate Problems

If lifestyle changes and medicines don’t improve your symptoms, surgery might be an option. The surgery could be performed by your GP at their office or by an urologist at the hospital. Your doctor will explain to you the pros and con of each surgery type so that you can decide which is best for your needs. They will explain to you any other options such as regular checkups by your GP or a urologist.

The good news is that BPH, and most other prostate problems, aren’t a sign of cancer. This doesn’t mean that they can be ignored. It is important to continue your regular visits with your GP as well as your PSA/DRE tests. These can be the best way of detecting cancer or other conditions before they become serious. If the disease is detected early on, treatments are available that can save a life. This is particularly true of prostate cancer, which is usually treatable if it’s caught before it becomes advanced.
