How to Know If you have Prostate Problems

Men over 50 and those with a history of prostate cancer in their family should be screened regularly by their doctor. A simple blood test, called PSA, can detect an enlarged prostrate. It can also tell you if you are at risk of developing cancer, or if other medical conditions may require treatment.

If your doctor suspects that you have a prostatic problem, he will want to learn about all of your symptoms and the length of time they have been occurring. You will be asked about any pain you feel when you urinate and if you have noticed any changes to your urine. They may recommend a digital rectal exam (DRE), where a gloved and lubricated finger is placed on the prostate from inside your rectum. This procedure takes approximately 10-15 seconds.

Prostate Problems Symptoms

The prostate is a walnut sized gland located in the lower urinary system, both in front and in back of the penis. The prostate is responsible for producing the semen that is used to produce sperm. The most common prostate problem is benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), which occurs when the prostate enlarges and interferes with urine flow. Other symptoms include painful urination, a weak flow of urine, and hesitancy or stopping midstream. Some men with BPH also experience a loss of bowel control, which is known as fecal incontinence. Not being able to urinate is a more severe symptom.

Medicine for Prostate Disorders

There are several different medicines available to help treat prostate problems. They can be liquids or pills, or tablets or liquids in a suppository. The liquid is passed into your bladder through the penis. Saw palmetto can be purchased as a herbal extract or in pill form. These medications can either be taken by themselves or in combination with other medications, according to your doctor.

Surgery for Prostate Problems

If lifestyle changes or medicines do not improve symptoms, surgery may be an alternative. This could be done in your GP’s surgery or by a urologist at a hospital. Your doctor will explain to you the pros and con of each surgery type so that you can decide which is best for your needs. They will also explain other options, such as regular check-ups at your GP’s office or with a urologist in the hospital.

The good news is that BPH, and most other prostate problems, aren’t a sign of cancer. But that doesn’t make them go away. It’s important to keep up with your regular visits to the GP, as well as having your PSA and DRE tests. These can be the best way of detecting cancer or other conditions before they become serious. And if the disease is detected early, there are treatments that can save lives. This is true in particular of prostate cancer. If caught early, it is usually treatable.
