How to Know If you have Prostate Problems
Men who are older or have a family history should visit their doctor regularly for a screening. A simple blood test, called PSA, can detect an enlarged prostrate. It can also tell you if you are at risk of developing cancer, or if other medical conditions may require treatment.
If your doctor suspects you have a problem with your prostate, they will want to know all about your symptoms. They will also want to know how long these symptoms have been occurring. They will ask you about any pain or burning you have when you urinate, and whether you’ve noticed any changes in your urine. They may recommend a DRE, where a finger with lubricant and gloves is placed inside your rectum on the prostate. This takes between 10-15 seconds.
Prostate Problems Symptoms
The prostate is an almond-sized gland that can be found in the lower urethra, at the front and the back of the genital penis. It’s responsible for producing semen, which is used in the production of sperm. BPH is the most common prostate condition. It occurs when the prostate grows and interferes with the flow of urine. Other symptoms of BPH include painful urination. A weak flow of urine and hesitancy. Some men with BPH experience fecal (or bowel) incontinence. The prostate can cause a more serious symptom, such as not being able urinate. This is a medical crisis.
Medicine for Prostate Disorders
There are a variety of medicines that can help with prostate issues. These medicines can be taken as pills or tablets, but they can also be liquids put into a supppository. The liquid then passes into the bladder via your penis. Saw palmetto comes in both liquid extract and herbal supplements. These medications may be used in combination or alone, depending upon your doctor’s recommendation.
Surgery for Prostate Issues
If lifestyle changes and medicines don’t improve your symptoms, surgery might be an option. This could be done in your GP’s surgery or by a urologist at a hospital. Your doctor or specialist nurse will talk to you about the advantages and disadvantages of each type of surgery, so you can decide what is best for you. They will also explain other options, such as regular check-ups at your GP’s office or with a urologist in the hospital.
The good news is BPH and most other prostate issues are not cancerous. But that doesn’t make them go away. It’s important to keep up with your regular visits to the GP, as well as having your PSA and DRE tests. These tests are the best way to detect cancer and other conditions before they get serious. Early detection of the disease can save lives. This is true in particular of prostate cancer. If caught early, it is usually treatable.
