How to know if you have prostate issues
Men who are older or have a family history should visit their doctor regularly for a screening. A simple blood-test called PSA can detect a enlarged prostate. It can also indicate whether there is a high risk of cancer or other medical problems which may require treatment.
If your doctor believes you have a prostate problem they will want to hear all about your symptoms and how long they’ve been happening. They will ask you about any pain or burning you have when you urinate, and whether you’ve noticed any changes in your urine. They may recommend that you undergo a digital rectal examination (DRE), which involves placing a lubricated and gloved finger on your prostate from within your rectum. This takes about 10-15 seconds.
Prostate problems symptoms
The prostate is a walnut-sized gland found in the lower urinary tract, in the front and back of the penis. It is responsible for the production of semen, which in turn is used to make sperm. BPH is the most common prostate condition. It occurs when the prostate grows and interferes with the flow of urine. Other symptoms include painful urination, a weak flow of urine, and hesitancy or stopping midstream. Fecal incontinence is another symptom of BPH. A more serious symptom is the inability to urinate, which is a medical issue.
Medicine for Prostate Problems
Many different medicines can be used to treat prostate problems. They can be liquids or pills, or tablets or liquids in a suppository. The liquid then passes into the bladder via your penis. Saw palmetto comes in both liquid extract and herbal supplements. These medications can be used alone or in combination with others, depending on your doctor’s advice.
Surgery for Prostate Problems
Surgery may be an option if lifestyle changes and medications do not improve your symptoms. This could be done at your GP’s office or by a specialist urologist. Your doctor or nurse specialist will explain the pros and cons of different types of surgery to you so you can make an informed decision. They will also explain any other options that are available, such as having regular check-ups with your GP or with a urologist at the hospital.
The good news is BPH and most other prostate issues are not cancerous. This doesn’t mean that they can be ignored. It is important to continue your regular visits with your GP as well as your PSA/DRE tests. These can be the best way of detecting cancer or other conditions before they become serious. If the disease is caught early, treatments can save lives. This is especially true of prostate carcinoma, which can be treated if caught before it progresses.
