How to Know If you have Prostate Problems

Men who are older or have a family history should visit their doctor regularly for a screening. A simple blood test called PSA can detect an enlarged prostate. It can also tell you if you are at risk of developing cancer, or if other medical conditions may require treatment.

If your doctor suspects that you have a prostatic problem, he will want to learn about all of your symptoms and the length of time they have been occurring. You’ll be asked if there is any burning or pain when you urinate. They may also ask if your urine has changed. They may recommend that you undergo a digital rectal examination (DRE), which involves placing a lubricated and gloved finger on your prostate from within your rectum. This procedure takes approximately 10-15 seconds.

Symptoms of Prostate Problems

The prostate is a walnut-sized gland found in the lower urinary tract, in the front and back of the penis. It’s responsible for producing semen, which is used in the production of sperm. The most common prostate problem is benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), which occurs when the prostate enlarges and interferes with urine flow. Other symptoms are painful urination or a weak urine stream, as well as hesitancy, or stopping midstream. Some men with BPH experience fecal (or bowel) incontinence. A more serious symptom is the inability to urinate, which is a medical issue.

Medicine for Prostate Problems

Many different medicines can be used to treat prostate problems. They can be liquids or pills, or tablets or liquids in a suppository. The liquid is then passed into the bladder through your penis. A common medication is saw palmetto, which can be bought as a herbal supplement in pill form or in a liquid extract. These medications can be taken alone or in combination, depending on the advice of your doctor.

Surgery for Prostate Disorders

If lifestyle changes or medicines do not improve symptoms, surgery may be an alternative. The surgery could be performed by your GP at their office or by an urologist at the hospital. Your doctor or specialist will discuss the pros and cons of each type surgery so that you can choose what is right for you. They will explain to you any other options such as regular checkups by your GP or a urologist.

The good news is BPH and most other prostate issues are not cancerous. This doesn’t mean that they can be ignored. It is important to continue your regular visits with your GP as well as your PSA/DRE tests. These tests can help detect cancer or other serious conditions early. And if the disease is detected early, there are treatments that can save lives. This is true in particular of prostate cancer. If caught early, it is usually treatable.
