How to know if you have prostate issues
Men who are older and those with a family history of prostate cancer should see their doctor for regular screening. A simple blood test called PSA can detect an enlarged prostate. It can also show if there’s a chance of developing cancer or any other medical issues that require treatment.
If your doctor suspects you have a problem with your prostate, they will want to know all about your symptoms. They will also want to know how long these symptoms have been occurring. You will be asked about any pain you feel when you urinate and if you have noticed any changes to your urine. A digital rectal (DRE) may be recommended, in which a finger is placed on your prostate with a lubricated glove from inside your rectum. This takes around 10-15 seconds.
Prostate Problems Symptoms
The prostate is a walnut-sized gland found in the lower urinary tract, in the front and back of the penis. It’s responsible for producing semen, which is used in the production of sperm. BPH (benign prostatic hyperplasia) is the most prevalent prostate problem. This occurs when prostate enlarges, causing it to interfere with urine flow. Other symptoms of BPH include painful urination. A weak flow of urine and hesitancy. Fecal incontinence is another symptom of BPH. Not being able to urinate is a more severe symptom.
Medicine for Prostate Issues
Many different medicines can be used to treat prostate problems. These can be pills or tablets, or they can be in the form of liquids that are put into a suppository. The liquid is then passed through the penis into your bladder. Saw palmetto comes in both liquid extract and herbal supplements. These medications may be used in combination or alone, depending upon your doctor’s recommendation.
Surgery for Prostate Problems
If lifestyle changes or medicines do not improve symptoms, surgery may be an alternative. The surgery could be performed by your GP at their office or by an urologist at the hospital. Your doctor or specialist will discuss the pros and cons of each type surgery so that you can choose what is right for you. They will also explain any other options that are available, such as having regular check-ups with your GP or with a urologist at the hospital.
The good news about BPH is that it’s not a cancer sign. But that doesn’t make them go away. You should continue to visit your GP regularly and have your PSA and DRE tested. These tests can be used to detect cancer or other conditions early on. If the disease is detected early on, treatments are available that can save a life. This is especially true for prostate cancer. It is usually treatable when caught before it has advanced.
