How to know if you have prostate issues
Men over 50 and those with a history of prostate cancer in their family should be screened regularly by their doctor. A simple PSA blood test can detect an over-inflated prostate. It can also indicate if there is a risk of developing cancer or other medical problems that may need treatment.
If you believe that your doctor has diagnosed you with a prostate condition, they will ask about your symptoms. Tell them how long they have been going on. You will be asked about any pain you feel when you urinate and if you have noticed any changes to your urine. They may recommend a DRE, where a finger with lubricant and gloves is placed inside your rectum on the prostate. This takes about 10-15 seconds.
Prostate problems symptoms
The prostate, a walnut-sized organ, is located in the lower tract of the urinary system. It can be found on the front or back of penis. The prostate is responsible for producing the semen that is used to produce sperm. The most common prostate problem is benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), which occurs when the prostate enlarges and interferes with urine flow. Other symptoms include painful urination, a weak flow of urine, and hesitancy or stopping midstream. Fecal incontinence, also known as bowel incontinence, is another symptom that some men with BPH may experience. A more serious symptom of the prostate is not being able to urinate at all, which is a medical emergency.
Medicine for Prostate Issues
Many different medicines can be used to treat prostate problems. These medicines can be taken as pills or tablets, but they can also be liquids put into a supppository. The liquid is then passed through the penis into your bladder. A common medication is saw palmetto, which can be bought as a herbal supplement in pill form or in a liquid extract. These medications may be used in combination or alone, depending upon your doctor’s recommendation.
Surgery for Prostate Disorders
Surgery may be an option if lifestyle changes and medications do not improve your symptoms. This could be done at your GP’s office or by a specialist urologist. Your doctor or specialist will discuss the pros and cons of each type surgery so that you can choose what is right for you. They will explain to you any other options such as regular checkups by your GP or a urologist.
The good news is that BPH, and most other prostate problems, aren’t a sign of cancer. But that doesn’t make them go away. It is important to continue your regular visits with your GP as well as your PSA/DRE tests. These can be the best way of detecting cancer or other conditions before they become serious. And if the disease is detected early, there are treatments that can save lives. This is especially true of prostate carcinoma, which can be treated if caught before it progresses.
