How to Know if you have prostate problems
Men who are older and those with a family history of prostate cancer should see their doctor for regular screening. A simple blood test, called PSA, can detect an enlarged prostrate. It can also tell you if you are at risk of developing cancer, or if other medical conditions may require treatment.
If your doctor suspects you have a problem with your prostate, they will want to know all about your symptoms. They will also want to know how long these symptoms have been occurring. They will ask you about any pain or burning you have when you urinate, and whether you’ve noticed any changes in your urine. They may recommend that you undergo a digital rectal examination (DRE), which involves placing a lubricated and gloved finger on your prostate from within your rectum. This takes between 10-15 seconds.
Prostate Problems Symptoms
The prostate is a walnut-sized gland found in the lower urinary tract, in the front and back of the penis. It produces semen which is used for the production sperm. BPH (benign prostatic hyperplasia) is the most prevalent prostate problem. This occurs when prostate enlarges, causing it to interfere with urine flow. Other symptoms of BPH include painful urination. A weak flow of urine and hesitancy. Fecal incontinence is another symptom of BPH. A more serious symptom is the inability to urinate, which is a medical issue.
Medicine for Prostate Problems
There are several different medicines available to help treat prostate problems. These medicines can be taken as pills or tablets, but they can also be liquids put into a supppository. The liquid then passes into the bladder via your penis. Saw palmetto comes in both liquid extract and herbal supplements. These medications can be taken alone or in combination, depending on the advice of your doctor.
Surgery for Prostate Issues
If lifestyle changes or medicines do not improve symptoms, surgery may be an alternative. This can be done by your GP or a urologist in a hospital. Your doctor or nurse specialist will explain the pros and cons of different types of surgery to you so you can make an informed decision. They will also explain any other options that are available, such as having regular check-ups with your GP or with a urologist at the hospital.
The good news is that BPH, and most other prostate problems, aren’t a sign of cancer. But that does not mean they should be ignored. It’s important to keep up with your regular visits to the GP, as well as having your PSA and DRE tests. These tests can be used to detect cancer or other conditions early on. Early detection of the disease can save lives. This is particularly true of prostate cancer, which is usually treatable if it’s caught before it becomes advanced.
