How to Know if you have prostate problems
Men who are older or have a family history should visit their doctor regularly for a screening. A simple blood test, called PSA, can detect an enlarged prostrate. It can also tell you if you are at risk of developing cancer, or if other medical conditions may require treatment.
If you believe that your doctor has diagnosed you with a prostate condition, they will ask about your symptoms. Tell them how long they have been going on. You’ll be asked if there is any burning or pain when you urinate. They may also ask if your urine has changed. They may recommend a DRE, where a finger with lubricant and gloves is placed inside your rectum on the prostate. This takes between 10-15 seconds.
Prostate problems can be characterized by a variety of symptoms
The prostate is a walnut sized gland located in the lower urinary system, both in front and in back of the penis. It’s responsible for producing semen, which is used in the production of sperm. BPH is the most common prostate condition. It occurs when the prostate grows and interferes with the flow of urine. Other symptoms include painful urination, a weak flow of urine, and hesitancy or stopping midstream. Some men with BPH also experience a loss of bowel control, which is known as fecal incontinence. A more serious symptom is the inability to urinate, which is a medical issue.
Medicine for Prostate Issues
There are many different medicines that can be used to help with prostate problems. They can be liquids or pills, or tablets or liquids in a suppository. The liquid then passes into the bladder via your penis. Saw palmetto can be purchased as a herbal extract or in pill form. These medications can be taken alone or in combination, depending on the advice of your doctor.
Surgery for Prostate Disorders
Surgery might be an effective option if lifestyle modifications and medicines fail to improve your symptoms. This could be done in your GP’s surgery or by a urologist at a hospital. Your doctor or specialist will discuss the pros and cons of each type surgery so that you can choose what is right for you. They will explain to you any other options such as regular checkups by your GP or a urologist.
The good news is that BPH, and most other prostate problems, aren’t a sign of cancer. This doesn’t mean that they can be ignored. It’s important to keep up with your regular visits to the GP, as well as having your PSA and DRE tests. These tests are the best way to detect cancer and other conditions before they get serious. Early detection of the disease can save lives. This is especially true for prostate cancer. It is usually treatable when caught before it has advanced.
