How to know if you have prostate issues
Men over 50 and those with a history of prostate cancer in their family should be screened regularly by their doctor. A simple PSA blood test can detect an over-inflated prostate. It can also indicate if there is a risk of developing cancer or other medical problems that may need treatment.
If your doctor suspects you have a problem with your prostate, they will want to know all about your symptoms. They will also want to know how long these symptoms have been occurring. They will ask you about any pain or burning you have when you urinate, and whether you’ve noticed any changes in your urine. They may recommend a digital rectal exam (DRE), where a gloved and lubricated finger is placed on the prostate from inside your rectum. This takes around 10-15 seconds.
Prostate problems can be characterized by a variety of symptoms
The prostate is a walnut-sized gland found in the lower urinary tract, in the front and back of the penis. It’s responsible for producing semen, which is used in the production of sperm. BPH (benign prostatic hyperplasia) is the most prevalent prostate problem. This occurs when prostate enlarges, causing it to interfere with urine flow. Other symptoms include painful or difficult urination and a weak urine flow. Some men with BPH experience fecal (or bowel) incontinence. A more serious symptom is the inability to urinate, which is a medical issue.
Medicine for Prostate Issues
There are many different medicines that can be used to help with prostate problems. They can be liquids or pills, or tablets or liquids in a suppository. The liquid is passed into your bladder through the penis. Saw palmetto is a common medication. It can be purchased in liquid extract or as a herbal supplement. These medications can be taken alone or in combination, depending on the advice of your doctor.
Surgery for Prostate Problems
Surgery may be an option if lifestyle changes and medications do not improve your symptoms. This could be done at your GP’s office or by a specialist urologist. Your doctor will explain to you the pros and con of each surgery type so that you can decide which is best for your needs. They will also explain any other options that are available, such as having regular check-ups with your GP or with a urologist at the hospital.
The good news is BPH and most other prostate issues are not cancerous. But that doesn’t mean they can be ignored. It is important to continue your regular visits with your GP as well as your PSA/DRE tests. These can be the best way of detecting cancer or other conditions before they become serious. And if the disease is detected early, there are treatments that can save lives. This is true in particular of prostate cancer. If caught early, it is usually treatable.
