How to Know If you have Prostate Problems
Men over 50 and those with a history of prostate cancer in their family should be screened regularly by their doctor. A simple blood-test called PSA can detect a enlarged prostate. It can also tell you if you are at risk of developing cancer, or if other medical conditions may require treatment.
If you believe that your doctor has diagnosed you with a prostate condition, they will ask about your symptoms. Tell them how long they have been going on. You will be asked about any pain you feel when you urinate and if you have noticed any changes to your urine. They may recommend a digital rectal exam (DRE), where a gloved and lubricated finger is placed on the prostate from inside your rectum. This procedure takes approximately 10-15 seconds.
Symptoms of Prostate Problems
The prostate is an almond-sized gland that can be found in the lower urethra, at the front and the back of the genital penis. The prostate is responsible for producing the semen that is used to produce sperm. BPH (benign prostatic hyperplasia) is the most prevalent prostate problem. This occurs when prostate enlarges, causing it to interfere with urine flow. Other symptoms are painful urination or a weak urine stream, as well as hesitancy, or stopping midstream. Fecal incontinence, also known as bowel incontinence, is another symptom that some men with BPH may experience. A more serious symptom is the inability to urinate, which is a medical issue.
Medicine for Prostate Disorders
There are several different medicines available to help treat prostate problems. They can be liquids or pills, or tablets or liquids in a suppository. The liquid is then passed into the bladder through your penis. A common medication is saw palmetto, which can be bought as a herbal supplement in pill form or in a liquid extract. These medications can be taken alone or in combination, depending on the advice of your doctor.
Surgery for Prostate Issues
Surgery may be an option if lifestyle changes and medications do not improve your symptoms. The surgery could be performed by your GP at their office or by an urologist at the hospital. Your doctor or specialist nurse will talk to you about the advantages and disadvantages of each type of surgery, so you can decide what is best for you. They will also explain other options, such as regular check-ups at your GP’s office or with a urologist in the hospital.
The good news about BPH is that it’s not a cancer sign. But that doesn’t mean they can be ignored. You should continue to visit your GP regularly and have your PSA and DRE tested. These can be the best way of detecting cancer or other conditions before they become serious. Early detection of the disease can save lives. This is especially true of prostate carcinoma, which can be treated if caught before it progresses.
