How to Know If you have Prostate Problems
Men with a family background of prostate cancer and older men should see their doctor to have regular screenings. A simple blood test, called PSA, can detect an enlarged prostrate. It can also indicate whether there is a high risk of cancer or other medical problems which may require treatment.
If you believe that your doctor has diagnosed you with a prostate condition, they will ask about your symptoms. Tell them how long they have been going on. You will be asked about any pain you feel when you urinate and if you have noticed any changes to your urine. They may recommend a DRE, where a finger with lubricant and gloves is placed inside your rectum on the prostate. This takes about 10-15 seconds.
Symptoms of Prostate Problems
The prostate is an almond-sized gland that can be found in the lower urethra, at the front and the back of the genital penis. The prostate is responsible for producing the semen that is used to produce sperm. BPH (benign prostatic hyperplasia) is the most prevalent prostate problem. This occurs when prostate enlarges, causing it to interfere with urine flow. Other symptoms include painful or difficult urination and a weak urine flow. Fecal incontinence, also known as bowel incontinence, is another symptom that some men with BPH may experience. A more serious symptom is the inability to urinate, which is a medical issue.
Medicine for Prostate Disorders
There are a variety of medicines that can help with prostate issues. They can come in the form or tablets or liquids, which are then put into a suppository. The liquid is then passed through the penis into your bladder. Saw palmetto is a common medication. It can be purchased in liquid extract or as a herbal supplement. These medications can be taken alone or in combination, depending on the advice of your doctor.
Surgery for Prostate Disorders
If lifestyle changes or medicines do not improve symptoms, surgery may be an alternative. This could be done at your GP’s office or by a specialist urologist. Your doctor or specialist will discuss the pros and cons of each type surgery so that you can choose what is right for you. They will also explain other options, such as regular check-ups at your GP’s office or with a urologist in the hospital.
The good news is that BPH, and most other prostate problems, aren’t a sign of cancer. But that doesn’t make them go away. It’s important to keep up with your regular visits to the GP, as well as having your PSA and DRE tests. These tests are the best way to detect cancer and other conditions before they get serious. And if the disease is detected early, there are treatments that can save lives. This is especially true of prostate carcinoma, which can be treated if caught before it progresses.
