How to Know If you have Prostate Problems
Men who are older and those with a family history of prostate cancer should see their doctor for regular screening. A simple PSA blood test can detect an over-inflated prostate. It can also tell you if you are at risk of developing cancer, or if other medical conditions may require treatment.
If you believe that your doctor has diagnosed you with a prostate condition, they will ask about your symptoms. Tell them how long they have been going on. You will be asked about any pain you feel when you urinate and if you have noticed any changes to your urine. They may recommend a DRE, where a finger with lubricant and gloves is placed inside your rectum on the prostate. This takes about 10-15 seconds.
Symptoms of Prostate Problems
The prostate, a walnut-sized organ, is located in the lower tract of the urinary system. It can be found on the front or back of penis. It produces semen which is used for the production sperm. The most common prostate problem is benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), which occurs when the prostate enlarges and interferes with urine flow. Other symptoms of BPH include painful urination. A weak flow of urine and hesitancy. Some men with BPH experience fecal (or bowel) incontinence. A more serious symptom is the inability to urinate, which is a medical issue.
Medicine for Prostate Problems
There are a variety of medicines that can help with prostate issues. They can come in the form or tablets or liquids, which are then put into a suppository. The liquid is passed into your bladder through the penis. A common medication is saw palmetto, which can be bought as a herbal supplement in pill form or in a liquid extract. These medications may be used in combination or alone, depending upon your doctor’s recommendation.
Surgery for Prostate Disorders
Surgery might be an effective option if lifestyle modifications and medicines fail to improve your symptoms. This can be done by your GP or a urologist in a hospital. Your doctor or specialist nurse will talk to you about the advantages and disadvantages of each type of surgery, so you can decide what is best for you. They will also discuss any other options available, including regular checkups with a urologist or your GP.
The good news is that BPH, and most other prostate problems, aren’t a sign of cancer. But that does not mean they should be ignored. It’s important to keep up with your regular visits to the GP, as well as having your PSA and DRE tests. These tests are the best way to detect cancer and other conditions before they get serious. Early detection of the disease can save lives. This is true in particular of prostate cancer. If caught early, it is usually treatable.
