How to Know If you have Prostate Problems

Men who are older and those with a family history of prostate cancer should see their doctor for regular screening. A simple blood-test called PSA can detect a enlarged prostate. It can also show if there’s a chance of developing cancer or any other medical issues that require treatment.

If you believe that your doctor has diagnosed you with a prostate condition, they will ask about your symptoms. Tell them how long they have been going on. You’ll be asked if there is any burning or pain when you urinate. They may also ask if your urine has changed. They may recommend a digital rectal exam (DRE), where a gloved and lubricated finger is placed on the prostate from inside your rectum. This takes between 10-15 seconds.

Prostate problems symptoms

The prostate, a walnut-sized organ, is located in the lower tract of the urinary system. It can be found on the front or back of penis. It is responsible for the production of semen, which in turn is used to make sperm. BPH (benign prostatic hyperplasia) is the most prevalent prostate problem. This occurs when prostate enlarges, causing it to interfere with urine flow. Other symptoms are painful urination or a weak urine stream, as well as hesitancy, or stopping midstream. Some men with BPH experience fecal (or bowel) incontinence. Not being able to urinate is a more severe symptom.

Medicine for Prostate Disorders

There are several different medicines available to help treat prostate problems. They can be liquids or pills, or tablets or liquids in a suppository. The liquid is then passed into the bladder through your penis. A common medication is saw palmetto, which can be bought as a herbal supplement in pill form or in a liquid extract. These medications can either be taken by themselves or in combination with other medications, according to your doctor.

Surgery for Prostate Problems

If lifestyle changes or medicines do not improve symptoms, surgery may be an alternative. This can be done by your GP or a urologist in a hospital. Your doctor or specialist nurse will talk to you about the advantages and disadvantages of each type of surgery, so you can decide what is best for you. They will explain to you any other options such as regular checkups by your GP or a urologist.

The good news is BPH and most other prostate issues are not cancerous. But that does not mean they should be ignored. It is important to continue your regular visits with your GP as well as your PSA/DRE tests. These can be the best way of detecting cancer or other conditions before they become serious. If the disease is caught early, treatments can save lives. This is especially true of prostate carcinoma, which can be treated if caught before it progresses.
