How to Know If you have Prostate Problems
Men who are older or have a family history should visit their doctor regularly for a screening. A simple blood test, called PSA, can detect an enlarged prostrate. It can also indicate if there is a risk of developing cancer or other medical problems that may need treatment.
If you believe that your doctor has diagnosed you with a prostate condition, they will ask about your symptoms. Tell them how long they have been going on. You’ll be asked if there is any burning or pain when you urinate. They may also ask if your urine has changed. A digital rectal (DRE) may be recommended, in which a finger is placed on your prostate with a lubricated glove from inside your rectum. This takes between 10-15 seconds.
Prostate problems can be characterized by a variety of symptoms
The prostate is an almond-sized gland that can be found in the lower urethra, at the front and the back of the genital penis. It’s responsible for producing semen, which is used in the production of sperm. BPH, or benign prostatic hyperplasia, is the most common problem with the prostate. This occurs when it enlarges to the point that it interferes in urine flow. Other symptoms are painful urination or a weak urine stream, as well as hesitancy, or stopping midstream. Fecal incontinence, also known as bowel incontinence, is another symptom that some men with BPH may experience. Not being able to urinate is a more severe symptom.
Medicine for Prostate Problems
There are many different medicines that can be used to help with prostate problems. They can come in the form or tablets or liquids, which are then put into a suppository. The liquid is then passed into the bladder through your penis. Saw palmetto is a common medication. It can be purchased in liquid extract or as a herbal supplement. These medications can be taken alone or in combination, depending on the advice of your doctor.
Surgery for Prostate Disorders
If lifestyle changes and medicines don’t improve your symptoms, surgery might be an option. This can be done by your GP or a urologist in a hospital. Your doctor or specialist will discuss the pros and cons of each type surgery so that you can choose what is right for you. They will also explain other options, such as regular check-ups at your GP’s office or with a urologist in the hospital.
The good thing is that BPH and other prostate problems are not a sign of a cancer. But that doesn’t mean they can be ignored. It is important to continue your regular visits with your GP as well as your PSA/DRE tests. These tests are the best way to detect cancer and other conditions before they get serious. And if the disease is detected early, there are treatments that can save lives. This is especially true of prostate carcinoma, which can be treated if caught before it progresses.
