How to Know If you have Prostate Problems
Men who are older and those with a family history of prostate cancer should see their doctor for regular screening. A simple blood test called PSA can detect an enlarged prostate. It can also show if there’s a chance of developing cancer or any other medical issues that require treatment.
If you believe that your doctor has diagnosed you with a prostate condition, they will ask about your symptoms. Tell them how long they have been going on. You’ll be asked if there is any burning or pain when you urinate. They may also ask if your urine has changed. A digital rectal (DRE) may be recommended, in which a finger is placed on your prostate with a lubricated glove from inside your rectum. This takes about 10-15 seconds.
Prostate Problems Symptoms
The prostate is a walnut-sized gland found in the lower urinary tract, in the front and back of the penis. It’s responsible for producing semen, which is used in the production of sperm. BPH, or benign prostatic hyperplasia, is the most common problem with the prostate. This occurs when it enlarges to the point that it interferes in urine flow. Other symptoms are painful urination or a weak urine stream, as well as hesitancy, or stopping midstream. Some men with BPH also experience a loss of bowel control, which is known as fecal incontinence. Not being able to urinate is a more severe symptom.
Medicine for Prostate Issues
There are a variety of medicines that can help with prostate issues. These can be pills or tablets, or they can be in the form of liquids that are put into a suppository. The liquid is passed into your bladder through the penis. Saw palmetto comes in both liquid extract and herbal supplements. These medications can be used alone or in combination with others, depending on your doctor’s advice.
Surgery for Prostate Problems
Surgery may be an option if lifestyle changes and medications do not improve your symptoms. This can be done by your GP or a urologist in a hospital. Your doctor or specialist nurse will talk to you about the advantages and disadvantages of each type of surgery, so you can decide what is best for you. They will also explain any other options that are available, such as having regular check-ups with your GP or with a urologist at the hospital.
The good news is that BPH, and most other prostate problems, aren’t a sign of cancer. But that doesn’t make them go away. It’s vital to maintain regular visits to your GP and to have your PSA or DRE tests. These can be the best way of detecting cancer or other conditions before they become serious. And if the disease is detected early, there are treatments that can save lives. This is true in particular of prostate cancer. If caught early, it is usually treatable.
