How to Know if you have prostate problems
Men who are older or have a family history should visit their doctor regularly for a screening. A simple blood test, called PSA, can detect an enlarged prostrate. It can also show if there’s a chance of developing cancer or any other medical issues that require treatment.
If you believe that your doctor has diagnosed you with a prostate condition, they will ask about your symptoms. Tell them how long they have been going on. You will be asked about any pain you feel when you urinate and if you have noticed any changes to your urine. A digital rectal (DRE) may be recommended, in which a finger is placed on your prostate with a lubricated glove from inside your rectum. This takes about 10-15 seconds.
Prostate problems can be characterized by a variety of symptoms
The prostate is a walnut-sized gland found in the lower urinary tract, in the front and back of the penis. The prostate is responsible for producing the semen that is used to produce sperm. The most common prostate problem is benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), which occurs when the prostate enlarges and interferes with urine flow. Other symptoms include painful urination, a weak flow of urine, and hesitancy or stopping midstream. Some men with BPH also experience a loss of bowel control, which is known as fecal incontinence. Not being able to urinate is a more severe symptom.
Medicine for Prostate Disorders
There are many different medicines that can be used to help with prostate problems. These can be pills or tablets, or they can be in the form of liquids that are put into a suppository. The liquid then passes into the bladder via your penis. Saw palmetto can be purchased as a herbal extract or in pill form. These medications can either be taken by themselves or in combination with other medications, according to your doctor.
Surgery for Prostate Disorders
Surgery may be an option if lifestyle changes and medications do not improve your symptoms. The surgery could be performed by your GP at their office or by an urologist at the hospital. Your doctor or nurse specialist will explain the pros and cons of different types of surgery to you so you can make an informed decision. They will also discuss any other options available, including regular checkups with a urologist or your GP.
The good news is BPH and most other prostate issues are not cancerous. But that doesn’t make them go away. You should continue to visit your GP regularly and have your PSA and DRE tested. These tests are the best way to detect cancer and other conditions before they get serious. If the disease is caught early, treatments can save lives. This is true in particular of prostate cancer. If caught early, it is usually treatable.
