How To Know If You Have Prostate Problems
Men who are older or have a family history should visit their doctor regularly for a screening. A simple blood test called PSA can detect an enlarged prostate. It can also indicate whether there is a high risk of cancer or other medical problems which may require treatment.
If your doctor suspects you have a problem with your prostate, they will want to know all about your symptoms. They will also want to know how long these symptoms have been occurring. You’ll be asked if there is any burning or pain when you urinate. They may also ask if your urine has changed. They may recommend that you undergo a digital rectal examination (DRE), which involves placing a lubricated and gloved finger on your prostate from within your rectum. This takes around 10-15 seconds.
Prostate Problems Symptoms
The prostate is a walnut-sized gland found in the lower urinary tract, in the front and back of the penis. It produces semen which is used for the production sperm. The most common prostate problem is benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), which occurs when the prostate enlarges and interferes with urine flow. Other symptoms are painful urination or a weak urine stream, as well as hesitancy, or stopping midstream. Some men with BPH experience fecal (or bowel) incontinence. A more serious symptom of the prostate is not being able to urinate at all, which is a medical emergency.
Medicine for Prostate Disorders
There are a variety of medicines that can help with prostate issues. These medicines can be taken as pills or tablets, but they can also be liquids put into a supppository. The liquid is then passed through the penis into your bladder. A common medication is saw palmetto, which can be bought as a herbal supplement in pill form or in a liquid extract. These medications can be used alone or in combination with others, depending on your doctor’s advice.
Surgery for Prostate Disorders
If lifestyle changes and medicines don’t improve your symptoms, surgery might be an option. This could be done in your GP’s surgery or by a urologist at a hospital. Your doctor or specialist will discuss the pros and cons of each type surgery so that you can choose what is right for you. They will also explain other options, such as regular check-ups at your GP’s office or with a urologist in the hospital.
The good news is that BPH, and most other prostate problems, aren’t a sign of cancer. But that doesn’t make them go away. It is important to continue your regular visits with your GP as well as your PSA/DRE tests. These tests are the best way to detect cancer and other conditions before they get serious. Early detection of the disease can save lives. This is especially true of prostate carcinoma, which can be treated if caught before it progresses.
